the music elite - justified or snobbish

I have met alot of people through music and alot outside of music,but music inevitably comes up and that's where i find some common ground.

Now for me, i am eclectic, i know everyone at some point has uttered those words, but then follow it up with i don't like..... if you say that you're not eclectic.  I enjoy every form of music,be it sang or instrumental, i don't like every song i hear, but i don't immediately dislike said performer which leads me to the so called music elite.

i have a friend who we shall call Dave for anonymity, he will only listen to 80's metal bands, metallica, megadeth etc, i personally don't enjoy said bands but i can't pick faults with what he likes. The reason i mentioned Dave is because he refuses to even contemplate listening to a different style of music, immediately dismissing it as awful and an offence to call it music. My view is he's being too elitist, there are countless bands out there that  don't get said recognition because they aren't liked by the ever increasing music elite.

I may be described as an elitist, I own and will continue to own every pearl Jam record released, regardless of how good or bad it is, and believe me they have released some pretty bad albums, but i continue to support them because i am a fan and if yure a true fsn then you wouldn't stop supporting them because they're last album wasn't of a standard you remember.

I rarely buy whole albums anymore, not because i have a problem with the price, or i prefer downloads,but because its been so long since ive heard an album where every song on it isliller. I have maybe 50,000 songs by thousands of artists, ranging through the entire music spectrum, all bases are covered, i didn't set out to make sure i had at least one song from every genre of music, it just happened that at that moment i liked thst song.

In conclusion, in my personal view there is no room for the music elitists, they may think they're views are warranted, of course we live in a free society where you're welcome to your opinions, but to ridicule someone who happens to enjoy music you would deem "offensive to music" is wrong on so many levels.

    nice thoughts Ears....

    i agree. elitists often talk and behave as if they have some direct line or understanding that somehow trumps others music and their enjoyment of it.

    is it possible the same elitists are the people who wish to drive the sales of specific music makers?

    i agree. The elitists behave as if they have a direct line to some higher understanding when all they are doing is undermining and damaging the opinion and sometimes musical experience of others.
    are the same elitists the people who seem to promote the work of specific acts...

    Its definitely possible, the elitists aren't just the metal fans although in the circles i move in,they're definitely more prominent, but theres musical snobbery in all genres of music, ive seen people buy 2-3 copies of the same teeny bop pop album when asked why, they responded with "it needs to be number one ". Gone are the days when music was just that, music, written and recorded purely because the band or singer wanted to. Now it's about how many records you can see and about how much money you can get,

      totally agree.... this fits with one of the saddest things i ever heard..
      a 'teenybop' album - where when asked what they thought fans wanted it to be number one because the band worked so hard... not because the music was great...

      Exactly, they form these little boy groups(band conjures images of actually playing instruments) send them into a studio and have them basically sing words from a sheet, whereas bands form and tour relentlessly, playing every seedy little pub and bar they can, trying to build a fanbase, just to get their songs out there and yet, they're forgotten about almost as quick as they where found.

    yes.. nothing against fame and success of course.. but it should be noticed before the music..... and the work put in .by many to create and develop good music....we dont get to hear ... because of some specific elitists
